How can art therapy help me?
Art therapy can help you tap into how your body is feeling and express emotions when you may not have the words. It calms the nervous system, teaching you how to both regulate and release your emotions, giving you the tools to then bring your learnings outside of the therapy space into your day-to-day life. With the guidance of a professionally-trained and registered therapist to guide you, art therapy provides a safe space to better understand yourself and your experiences. The multidisciplinary nature of art therapy enables you to acquire new creative skills and techniques while accessing therapeutic support and guidance.
How can art therapy help my child?
Art therapy sessions are tailored to suit the needs and goals of the individual. Whether it’s social connection, understanding emotions, self-expression, building confidence and resilience, coping with anxiety, fine and gross motor skill development or simply a space to be their true selves – art therapy can help. Rachel has both training and experience working with neurodiverse, disabled and Deaf individuals. We welcome NDIS-funded individuals.
Why would art therapy suit me or my child better than verbal or other therapies?
Art therapy breaks down the barriers of the confronting and at times intimidating nature of traditional talk-therapy. Art therapy engages the body and mind together to process emotions that are otherwise difficult to express. Through the action of artmaking, the the use of repetitive, soothing movements, heals both a dysregulated nervous system and trauma. By creating art, subconscious thoughts, experiences and emotions that may be buried deep within you can be externalised, leading to a state of wholeness and healing. For children, art therapy develops skills of emotional literacy, self-expression and resilience, while fostering behavioural and emotional regulation.
CLIENT FEEDBACK
My family first met Rachel when she was the office manager for our Specialist Paediatrician. She was welcoming, empathetic and an extremely calming influence on the environment of the office. Creating a safe space for all three of my neurodiverse children. It was fantastic to discover that she was working towards building a career in art therapy. When my daughter turned 15 it was time for Gavi to shift gear in her therapy. Gavi is on the Spectrum, with high levels of both anxiety and historical trauma. Happily this coincided with Rachel starting up her practice. Rachel incorporated her contextual experience with Gavi’s home life and created a safe seamless therapeutic environment for Gavi to safely navigate her life situations using self initiated art processes under Rachel’s guidance. It has been a wonderfully healing and enriching experience for Gavi and by extension our entire family.
