What is art therapy?
In a nutshell, art therapy can be described as an alternative to verbal therapies. It comprises the creative process and art-making alongside a therapist to support self-expression. Art therapy can be more suitable than traditional forms of therapy for those who find it difficult to verbalise their thoughts or emotions. It focusses on the process, rather than the final product and is therefore suitable for anyone of any skill level, age or ability.
Why art therapy?
Art therapy can serve many purposes. It can help process and express emotions, thoughts, experiences as well as processing trauma. Art therapy can support emotional regulation, self-confidence and further enhance a sense of self or identity. Art therapy can be a method of pain relief, self-care and support the development of healthy coping skills. Art therapy can increase communication skills, foster a sense of safety and model healthy relationships. Art therapy engages the mind and body simultaneously which is how it brings us into the present moment and can help ground, regulate and sometimes bring us into a state of flow. Art therapy is holistic, it is not concerned about diagnoses or conditions, it meets the individual where they are at.
